The Differences Between the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the 2022 Hyundai Kona EV
June 21 2022,
Hyundai currently offers two electric vehicles in Canada which are quite different from one another in many ways, some of which follow.
The dimensions
One of the biggest differences between the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Hyundai Kona EV is their sizes. The Ioniq 5 is larger than the Kona in every direction, which allows it to offer more interior space to the benefit of comfort and cargo capacity, which can reach 1,679 liters with the rear seats folded down compared to 1,297 liters in the Kona EV.
This means that if you regularly transport rear-seat passengers or bulky items, the Ioniq 5 will be a better choice for you. On the other hand, the smaller dimensions of the Kona EV make it easier to drive and park in crowded cities and in heavy traffic, which could make it better suited to you.
The powertrains
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is available with two powertrains and two battery sizes that provide different levels of power and range. The standard version is powered by a rear-mounted motor that delivers 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque when combined with the 58-kWh battery. Selecting the Long-Range model expands the battery to 77.4-kWh which allows the same motor to produce 225 horsepower instead.
The Long-Range AWD model uses the same larger battery but it adds a second motor on the front axle, which ups the power to 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. The range for these models varies between 354 kilometers and 488 kilometers and the battery can be charged back up to 80% on a level 3 charger in under 18 minutes.
The 2022 Hyundai Kona EV has a simpler offering, with the only powertrain being composed of a motor in the front delivering 201 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque as well as a 64.0 kWh battery, which is good for 415 kilometers of range. This battery can be charged up to 80% with a level 3 charger in about 47 minutes.
