Hyundai's 2023 IONIQ 6 Earns Coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ Rating from IIHS
September 29 2023,
Hyundai's 2023 IONIQ 6 electric vehicle has clinched the TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), marking a significant milestone in the automaker's focus on safety. The recognition is notable for the rigorous standards it entails, particularly around crash-worthiness and front-crash prevention, both in daytime and nighttime conditions.
To be eligible for the TSP+ honor in 2023, a vehicle must secure "good" ratings in multiple crash tests including driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. Additionally, the vehicle needs to offer "Acceptable" or "Good" headlights as standard across all variants. The front-crash prevention system should also receive an "Advanced" or "Superior" rating in both daytime and nighttime pedestrian evaluations. The IONIQ 6 met all these criteria, setting it apart from competitors and even surpassing the lower-tier TOP SAFETY PICK requirements.
Brian Latouf, the global chief safety officer at Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized the automaker's long-term commitment to safety, stating that meeting the stringent IIHS standards is central to Hyundai's brand ethos. He highlighted that the TSP+ accolade for the 2023 IONIQ 6 underscores Hyundai's continuous development in safety engineering and technology integration.
David Harkey, the president of IIHS, also spoke favorably about the IONIQ 6's achievement. He stressed the importance of prioritizing safety features in electric and alternatively powered vehicles to progress toward the larger goal of zero traffic fatalities.
