Hyundai IONIQ 6's Electric Powertrain Earns Spot on Wards 10 Best List for 2023

The Hyundai IONIQ 6 sedan's electric powertrain has claimed a position on the 2023 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list, marking another milestone for the South Korean automaker. The annual accolade from WardsAuto honours pioneering powertrain technologies that are either new or have seen substantial improvements.

The IONIQ 6 distinguished itself in four key criteria: performance, charging capacity, driving range, and affordability. Notably, this recognition comes on the heels of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 SUV, which also made it to Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems in 2022.

Both the IONIQ 6 and its predecessor are built on Hyundai's proprietary Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This platform allows for dual-motor setups, maximizes interior volume, and optimizes vehicle performance. Hyundai's accolades from WardsAuto are not new; the company has garnered a total of 16 recognitions since the awards were established in 1995.

Byungho Lee, director of electrified propulsion development at Hyundai America Technical Center Inc., expressed that the award serves as a testament to the superior engineering capabilities of the E-GMP Platform. The system offers benefits such as quicker charging and extended range, setting a new standard for electric vehicles.

WardsAuto's evaluation emphasized that the IONIQ 6 delivers exceptional efficiency and performance across various driving modes. The vehicle's power delivery and efficiency, according to WardsAuto contributing editor Drew Winter, distinguish it from competitors, warranting its second consecutive appearance on the list.

In its 29th year, the Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems competition continues to showcase industry-leading powertrain innovations. This year saw 32 entries vying for the coveted awards, which also included winners from the 2022 class. The repeat recognition for Hyundai's IONIQ line underscores the brand's commitment to engineering excellence in the fast-evolving landscape of automotive technology.
